Sheriff Steve Sheldon and his staff met with the Richland County Commissioners last week, as detailed in minutes from the July 31 meeting.
Included in the discussion were the following specific topics:
- The interest of Madison Local Schools in obtaining a school resource officer, and plans to approach Crestview Schools on the same subject.
- The recent manhunt on Mansfield-Lucas Road and its positive outcome. Commissioner Marilyn John shared comments she had heard about the excellent work done by the Sheriff’s Office during this incident.
- The issue of repeated wastewater alarms which, according to Sheriff Sheldon, have taken substantial Office manpower and time.
- The replacement of firearms which are nearing the end of their useful life. Funds have been identified with possible trade in offset.
- The Department has been approached by Verizon to partner on a public safety broadband. On a test basis, the Sheriff’s Office would have “pre-emption,” allowing them to have priority over other calls. This will result in limited cost, the Office official shared, and the matter will be discussed further.
- The general issue of Sheriff’s Office vehicles was discussed, including possible leases, a shortage in funding for needed repairs, the need for two unmarked cars, and the interface between other expenditures and available monies. The Commissioners indicated that they will be looking for possible funding options.
