Tygers To Help Big Red Bookshelf

Schools will be closed for the Presidents Day holiday on Monday, February 18, but 14 Mansfield Senior High athletes will volunteer their time to encourage young children to read. The Tygers will participate in the Big Red Bookshelf Event from 11 AM to 1 PM at the Richland Carrousel in downtown Mansfield. The Big Red Bookshelf, an initiative of United Way of Richland County, provides new or gently used books to children up to third grade. Donated books are displayed on bright red bookshelves built by volunteers and distributed free of charge to children who need them. Read More

Auditions Set For Play About Trailblazing Professional Footballer

The Black Cyclone,” a play that tells the story of Charles Follis, the first black professional football player, will be featured again this spring on the stage of the Mansfield Senior High auditorium. The production is a collaboration between Jim Stoner, who wrote the original play, the North End Community Improvement Cooperative, and Mansfield City Schools as part of the district’s 21st Century state grant. An idea developed by the Career Tech Networking and Cybersecurity class has made Mansfield Senior High School one of five Ohio finalists in the $2 million Samsung 2018 Solve for Tomorrow Contest. Nationally, 250 schools – five from each state – will now compete to be one of three national winners named in the spring, each of whom will receive $100,000 in Samsung classroom technology and supplies. Two Mansfield Senior Chefs Compete At SkillsUSA Ohio

One culinary arts senior has represented Mansfield Senior High in spring SkillsUSA Ohio competition in Columbus. Another senior will compete later this month. Bryce Gillum demonstrated his baking skills during a grueling six-hour marathon at Columbus State Community College in March. Tygers Head To Science Day

Eight projects involving 10 students will represent Mansfield Senior High School at the seven-county Mohican District Science Day at Ashland University on March 24. The eight earned “superior” ratings from staff and community judges Thursday afternoon during Senior High’s annual science fair in the commons. Joetta McCruter-Polk’s assignment with Mansfield City Schools will demand the full range of her three decades of professional experience -- and she will have less than six months to make an impact. McCruter-Polk was hired January 16 to serve as family resource/engagement coordinator for the freshman class at Mansfield Senior High School.
