Mansfield Senior Falls In Close Contest

There are thousands of proud fans around north central Ohio this weekend after the Mansfield Senior Tygers played a great game though falling in overtime to Trotwood-Madison in the OHSAA Division III State Foootball Championship game, 14-7.

The overtime was forced when a 19 yard field goal was blocked by the Tygers with three seconds left in the game.

Richland County discovered something on Wednesday evening that other areas already know.

State championship football week and Christmas go hand-in-hand.

Hundreds of cheering Lucas Cubs and Mansfield Senior Tygers fans were on hand for an evening pep rally centered in the gazebo in Central Park. The weather was very chilly, and the PA system let a lot to be desired, but no one cared — they were there to support two schools which have rewritten local sports history this season. More…

Pep Rally Downtown For Tygers, Cubs

Mansfield Mayor Tim Theaker and Lucas Mayor Todd Hall will be on hand Wednesday as Richland County shows its support for its two state championship game-bound teams, the Mansfield Senior Tygers and the Lucas Cubs.

The Community Pep Rally will be held in Central Park in downtown Mansfield at 7:00 PM.

Everyone is invited to come out and support these young men, their coaches, and their schools.

It’s State Championship Week In Richland County!

The superlatives have been flying around the county for the last three days, and with good reason.

Two Richland County high schools are making the first-ever trek to Canton later this week to play in championship games for their respective Ohio High School Athletic Association football divisions. One of the largest and perhaps the smallest enrollment schools are making a statement about the quality of sporting in the north central Ohio area.

State championships can be transformative. When Galion won the Divison II state football title in 1985 in a 6-0 victory over Youngstown Cardinal Mooney, the win had a ripple effect that lasted for years in a city where economic hard times had eroded optimism. More…

Tickets are now on sale for Mansfield Senior‘s Division II district basketball tournament game against Vermillion.

Tygers To Help Big Red Bookshelf

Schools will be closed for the Presidents Day holiday on Monday, February 18, but 14 Mansfield Senior High athletes will volunteer their time to encourage young children to read.

The Tygers will participate in the Big Red Bookshelf Event from 11 AM to 1 PM at the Richland Carrousel in downtown Mansfield.

The Big Red Bookshelf, an initiative of United Way of Richland County, provides new or gently used books to children up to third grade. Donated books are displayed on bright red bookshelves built by volunteers and distributed free of charge to children who need them. More…

Auditions Set For Play About Trailblazing Professional Footballer

The Black Cyclone,” a play that tells the story of Charles Follis, the first black professional football player, will be featured again this spring on the stage of the Mansfield Senior High auditorium.

The production is a collaboration between Jim Stoner, who wrote the original play, the North End Community Improvement Cooperative, and Mansfield City Schools as part of the district’s 21st Century state grant. More…

Mansfield Senior An Ohio Finalist In Tech Competition

An idea developed by the Career Tech Networking and Cybersecurity class has made Mansfield Senior High School one of five Ohio finalists in the $2 million Samsung 2018 Solve for Tomorrow Contest.

Nationally, 250 schools – five from each state – will now compete to be one of three national winners named in the spring, each of whom will receive $100,000 in Samsung classroom technology and supplies. More…

One culinary arts senior has represented Mansfield Senior High in spring SkillsUSA Ohio competition in Columbus. Another senior will compete later this month.

Bryce Gillum demonstrated his baking skills during a grueling six-hour marathon at Columbus State Community College in March. Then, on April 24, Myron Barnhill-Rankin will have three hours to prepare and serve a complete chicken dinner at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. More…
