This past weekend, a set of artist exhibitions were unveiled at the Mansfield Art Center – one a skilled artisan of baskets and sculpture, and the other a prolific photographer.
These exhibitions are:
Dorothy Gill Barnes | In Nature | Main Gallery
Born in Iowa in 1927, and now settled in Ohio, Dorothy Gill Barnes is a veritable geyser of ideas. Well known as a basket maker, she is an equally skilled surgeon. Her focus on baskets and wood sculpture grew out her experience as a parent and teacher – drawing, sewing, and weaving with maidenhair ferns on a loom and looking to traditional, functional Native American baskets for inspiration. Wendy Minor Viny | Making Art on the Fly: The School Pickup Series | Foundation Gallery
“The days I pick up my children from school I shoot photos with my iPhone 6s from the window of my truck- it’s a 25 minute drive, one way, through beautiful Appalachia. What started as a mundane task has become my absorbing errand- as I sit in the student pickup line, I select, edit and post one photo to Instagram and Facebook – as an artist with young children this process allows me the opportunity to work, to see, to learn – while on the fly- I am in my sixth year of this practice, over 600 photos of my place and time in this world. “ – Wendy Minor Viny — www.instagram.com/wendyviny
These exhibitions are sponsored by The Taylor Metal Products Company. The Mansfield Art Center is located at 700 Marion Avenue in Mansfield.
