As Richland County is home to a regional campus of The Ohio State University and very much part of the university community, we occasionally take the opportunity to provide updates on all things OSU. Here are three recent news items from the state’s flagship institution of higher education:

24 Buckeyes Set for 2024 Summer Olympics

The Ohio State University is poised to make a significant mark at the 2024 Paris Olympics, sending 24 athletes to compete. These athletes, encompassing current, former, and incoming students, will represent the institution across nine sports and ten countries. This diverse group exemplifies Ohio State’s global reach and commitment to excellence in athletics. Notably, the university continues its tradition of strong Olympic representation, following a record 26 participants in the 2021 Tokyo Games.

Among the standout athletes are Alex Axon and Tristan Jankovics from the men’s swimming and diving program, competing for Team Canada, and Lena Hentschel, a German diver. These athletes will join the global stage from July 26 to August 11, striving for Olympic glory and bringing pride to Ohio State’s community. The presence of these Buckeyes at the Olympics highlights the university’s ability to nurture top-tier talent capable of competing at the highest levels of international sport.

Ohio State Research Expenditures Set New Record at $1.449 Billion

Ohio State University has set a new benchmark in research and development, recording $1.449 billion in expenditures for fiscal year 2023. This marks a 6% increase from the previous fiscal year and emphasizes the university’s expanding role in scientific research and innovation. Federal funding accounted for $694.7 million, with substantial contributions from the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense.

The university’s research initiatives cover a broad spectrum, including materials science, artificial intelligence, space exploration, and medical advancements. Ohio State President Walter “Ted” Carter Jr. emphasized the significance of this funding, highlighting its role in driving impactful discoveries that benefit society. The increase in research expenditures underscores Ohio State’s commitment to advancing knowledge and technology, positioning itself as a leader in various scientific fields.

President Carter Discusses University Mission, Affordability, New First-Year Class

At a recent community forum, Ohio State University President Walter “Ted” Carter Jr. outlined his strategic vision for the university’s future. Addressing the pressing challenges in higher education, Carter emphasized the necessity of making college more affordable and accessible. He noted that the average Ohio State student receives about $10,000 in scholarships, with 58% of graduates leaving with no student loan debt.

Carter also highlighted a record number of applications for the upcoming academic year, with 80,000 applicants, including 40,000 from in-state students. This surge suggests Ohio State may welcome its largest incoming freshman class since its founding in 1870. Carter’s vision focuses on elevating Ohio State from a good institution to the best, through innovation and strategic investments. His commitment to affordability and academic excellence aims to ensure that Ohio State remains a top choice for students seeking a quality education.
