More Opportunities For Learning: OSU Adds Five Majors

One of the many advantages of attending The Ohio State University at Mansfield is the ability to begin a path close to home that can lead to one of over 200 undergraduate majors. Some can be completed here, while others can be finished at main campus.

That number of potential majors recently increased by five.

OSUM Students Start Book Swap To Cut College Costs

Buying books can be expensive. Every semester many students have to make a decision that may hurt their academic progress – buy all the books required or forgo the expense to save a little money.

Students at The Ohio State University at Mansfield have decided to try to help each other out a bit by attending a textbook swap. Kidron Stamper, who serves as the student member of the Ohio State Mansfield Board of Trustees, helped coordinate the event. “As the student trustee, one of my big tasks is to help with college affordability,” Stamper explains. “Classes already cost money, so I came up with this idea where students can trade books at the beginning of the semester to help cut their expenses a little.” More…

OSU Mansfield Professor Lead Author For Study On Tipping Points

You probably overestimate just how far someone can push you before you reach your tipping point, new research suggests.

No, we’re not talking about your emotional tipping point.

A new study examined how far people thought they could lean over backwards before they would actually fall to the ground. When study participants were put into a device that slowly and safely tilted them, most thought they reached their tipping point when they were tilted somewhere near 14 degrees from vertical (straight up and down). But research suggests the actual tipping point for most people is nearer to 8 or 9 degrees, said Dennis Shaffer, lead author of the study and associate professor of psychology at The Ohio State University at Mansfield. On Monday night, the Ohio Microfarm Project, an initiative with “roots” at The Ohio State University at Manfsield, took to the stage in Columbus to share its vision.

The setting was an evening set aside for the ten finalists in the Alliance for the American Dream initiative to present their respective programs. Each is vying to be one of the three efforts selected to be presented to the initiative underwriter for funding and support, and to be shared as well with the three other universities involved in the Alliance – the University of Utah, Arizona State University, and the University of Wisconsin. For Col. Ken Kmetz, the Ohio Air National Guard and The Ohio State University at Mansfield were a combination that opened wide the doors to his professional career.

After enlisting in the Ohio Air National Guard in 1986, Kmetz, now commander of the Guard’s 179th Airlift Wing Maintenance Group, decided, “I’m going to finish my degree. How can I do that? That’s when I went to Ohio State.” He graduated from Ohio State Mansfield in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. More…

Ohio State Mansfield And Mansfield City Schools Announce Pathway Partnership For African American Students

The Ohio State University at Mansfield Dean/Director Norman Jones was the keynote speaker at the Mansfield NAACP Freedom Banquet on Saturday, October 27 and took the opportunity to talk about a partnership that could have a big impact for African American students in the Mansfield City School District. Jones announced a new collaboration between Ohio State Mansfield and Mansfield City Schools that creates a pipeline for African American students to earn their Bachelor’s degree with licensure in Education through Ohio State.
