Living in a community in the network of campuses of The Ohio State University, many Richland Countians are rabid supporters of Buckeye sports.
One tradition commonly associated with Buckeye football is ‘Block O,” a student organization at OSU that serves as the official cheering section. Founded in 1938, Block O has grown to become the largest student organization on the campus of the Ohio State University.
Block O is perhaps best known for occupying a section of seating at Ohio Stadium during home football games, leading cheers, and making designs using cards. A bit over 2,000 tickets are allotted to students to sit in this area; Block O itself has over 2,500 student members.
For many years, a large O, known as the “Athletic O,” was the primary source of visual identification for OSU Sports. Before that, it was what was also referred to as the simple “Block O.” That symbol can still be found on the OSU website home page and many other locations, including in the current academic logo. In any format, the single letter is instantly recognizable.
This past week, the single “O” made an appearance on the campus of The Ohio State University at Mansfield when it was erected on the side of John O. Riedl Hall. Riedl Hall houses the administrative offices of the campus and is the gateway building for OSUM. It opened in 2006.
A view of the new “Block O” can be seen below.
