An idea born of discussions in 1995 has ended its life some 21 years later.

Richland County’s Geographic Informational Systems Consortium began under Richland County Regional Planning, and by 2001 had employed its own staff person. The Consortium existed to allow municipalities and non-profit organizations to pool resources to acquire GIS services. As of last year, all County cities and villages were members, as were several county officials, townships, and others.

At its last meeting, Mansfield City Council voted to authorize signing of the Consortium’s Dissolution Agreement. The reason cited in the authorization ordinance: “…because of several reasons including decreasing membership and decreasing demand for GIS services, the Consortium is now experiencing insufficient revenue to continue providing its services and employ the Consortium’s GIS Manager.”

The Council vote was 8-0.
