The Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) released its Fourth of July holiday statistics recently, reporting an overall decrease in crashes, fatalities, and law enforcement engagements on Ohio roads compared to the same period last year.

Traffic Fatalities Lowered

The period from July 3 to July 4 showed a decrease in traffic fatalities. The reported numbers were as follows:

  • 2020: 25 fatalities
  • 2021: 3 fatalities
  • 2022: 16 fatalities
  • 2023: 11 fatalities

Fatal Crash Statistics

Data related to fatal crash statistics showed:

  • Safety Belt: Used (0), Not Used (3), Not Installed/Unknown (3)
  • Motorcycle Helmet: Used (0), Not Used/Unknown (4)
  • OVI (Operating a Vehicle under the Influence): Yes (2), No (5), Unknown (2)

County-Wise Incident Breakdown

In total, 13,989 incidents were recorded across several counties. The breakdown is as follows:

  • Warren: 294
  • Portage: 291

Comparison of patrol activities between 2023 and 2022 demonstrated a broad decrease across all categories:

  • Enforcement: 8,843 (2023), 21,843 (2022), -59.5% change
  • Non-Enforcement: 4,791 (2023), 11,843 (2022), -59.5% change
  • Crash: 249 (2023), 560 (2022), -55.5% change
  • Case: 129 (2023), 352 (2022), -63.4% change
  • OVI: 133 (2023), 447 (2022), -70.2% change
  • Suspended License: 403 (2023), 990 (2022), -59.3% change
  • Distracted Driving: 58 (2023), 256 (2022), -77.3% change
  • Safety Belt: 1,288 (2023), 3,015 (2022), -57.3% change
  • Assist: 1,067 (2023), 2,590 (2022), -58.8% change
  • Drugs: 96 (2023), 242 (2022), -60.3% change
  • Felony Arrest: 39 (2023), 111 (2022), -64.9% change
  • Felony Warrant: 9 (2023), 30 (2022), -70.0% change

The OSHP is yet to release its analysis of these statistics but overall, this year’s Fourth of July saw a significant reduction in traffic fatalities, crashes, and law enforcement engagements compared to the previous year.
