A Safer Memorial Day Weekend This Year, Including For Richland County

The Ohio State Highway Patrol has reported nine deaths on Ohio’s roadways during the 2021 Memorial Day weekend, according to provisional statistics.

This Memorial Day saw fewer fatalities than last year, when there were 20 traffic deaths during the weekend. When compared to the previous three-year average, the number of fatalities dropped by 49% this year. The four-day reporting period began Friday, May 28, and ran through Monday, May 31.

Fewer Travelers May Have Contributed To A Safer Thanksgiving Holiday In Ohio, Richland County

A reduced number of traveling motorists may have contributed to a somewhat safer Thanksgiving holiday period on Ohio roads, according to numbers shared by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Provisional numbers indicate that nine people were killed in nine crashes during that five day reporting period (Wednesday at midnight through Sunday at midnight), as compared to 15 fatal crashes in 2019 in which 18 people lost their lives.

Of the nine fatalities this year, four were not wearing a seat belt, and two involved impaired driving, according to the Patrol. More…

Patrol Warns About Drinking And Driving This Thanksgiving Holiday

While this Thanksgiving may look different, the Ohio State Highway Patrol expects many motorists to travel on Ohio’s roadways for the upcoming holiday. Before motorists hit the road, troopers want to make sure they are taking the proper safety measures by driving sober and wearing their safety belts.

Troopers will be highly visible and cracking down on impaired driving and those failing to wear a safety belt from Wednesday, November 25 at midnight through 11:59 PM on Sunday, November 29.

“We take impaired driving seriously and remain dedicated to promoting safety on Ohio’s roadways,” added Colonel Richard S. Fambro, Patrol superintendent. “We need motorists to commit to keeping our roads safe by planning ahead, designating a sober driver and insisting that everyone in the vehicle is buckled up.” More…

New Highway Patrol Graduate To Be Stationed In Mansfield

Fourth Of July Weekend Deadly On Ohio Roads

Perhaps reflecting the different ways in which people are traveling and a change in habits, the numbers released by the Ohio State Highway Patrol earlier this week about Fourth of July weekend traffic showed an unusual and tragic divergence.

On one hand, individual traffic incidents were down across the board in all categories– from crashes, OVI, to suspected license citations. Safety belt citations were 76.1% lower than in 2019. More…

Smiley Among Peace Officer Graduates

Members of the 143rd Basic Peace Officer Class received training certificates during a graduation ceremony held Thursday afternoon at the Ohio State Highway Patrol Training Academy. The 39 graduates will assume duties as peace officers for 23 Ohio agencies.

It was a dangerous holiday and weekend in Richland County and across the state over the Fourth of July, according to numbers released this week by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
