Perhaps it is due to a traffic increase related to the reopening of the economy after 2020’s economic shutdown.
Whatever the case it is clear that, based on recent numbers shared by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Richland County has seen an across the board increase in activity of the Patrol related to traffic enforcement over the last 11 months.
The increase has been a deadly one as well. Since the start of the year, 13 people have been killed on county roads, as compared to 7 last year. Only four of those fatal crashes occurred on or in close proximity to Interstate 71.

On Tuesday, June 25 at 5:31 PM Bellville Police initiated a car stop on St Rt 97 West in the area of I-71. The stop was made for traffic violations observed by the officers.
The 2000 Buick four door vehicle pulled into the Love’s Travel Stop, where officers made contact with the operator of the vehicle, a 48 year old Hancock County man. The man then accelerated out of the parking lot and entered I-71 southbound. More…

The Ohio State Highway Patrol has reported nine deaths on Ohio’s roadways during the 2021 Memorial Day weekend, according to provisional statistics.
This Memorial Day saw fewer fatalities than last year, when there were 20 traffic deaths during the weekend. When compared to the previous three-year average, the number of fatalities dropped by 49% this year. The four-day reporting period began Friday, May 28, and ran through Monday, May 31.

Perhaps reflecting the different ways in which people are traveling and a change in habits, the numbers released by the Ohio State Highway Patrol earlier this week about Fourth of July weekend traffic showed an unusual and tragic divergence.
On one hand, individual traffic incidents were down across the board in all categories– from crashes, OVI, to suspected license citations. Safety belt citations were 76.1% lower than in 2019. More…

A Mansfield Police Officer and two others were injured on Friday night in an accident which took place on East First Street.
According to information shared by the Mansfield Division of Police, at approximately 8:22 PM Officer Justin Cikity was responding to a “call for assistance” from other offices who had placed a radio call for help at the scene of a fight. More…

The Teen Driver Traffic Cone Program is designed to assist parents in helping their children, which possess a temporary driver’s permit, to become more confident drivers. Teen drivers will be able to practice the state’s maneuverability exam with oversight from their parent or guardian. More…
Having become law on October 29, House Bill 95 establishes Ohio’s unique approach of combating distracted driving by enhancing existing moving violations.
For example, law enforcement officers no longer will need to prove a driver is texting, but only that a moving violation has occurred and the driver was distracted at the time. More…
Ohio drivers beware. Your risk of colliding with deer may be on the rise, according to officials at the Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS) and the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP). The Richland County Safe Communities Coalition reports that for the month of December there were no traffic deaths in Richland County. There were six total traffic-related deaths for 2016 in Richland County. This marks the lowest total for traffic fatalities since the Richland County Safe Communities Coalition was formed in 2003. The record low follows the second worst year for traffic fatalities as there were 17 in 2015. And in 2011 there were five traffic fatalities in December alone. More…
On Sunday, we posted about a Mansfield man who was killed on Saturday while assisting others along a highway in rural West Virginia. Scott Banks was referred to as a “hero” in coverage by television station WTAP.
Banks’ obituary has now been posted online by Wappner Funeral Directors in Mansfield. It states in part, “Although his family mourns his death, they know Scott was doing exactly what he thought was right.” More…
The word “hero” is one which can be all-too casually thrown about. In the case of Mansfielder Scott Banks, however, his last few moments of life clearly demonstrated heroic action.
According to the news site of television station WTAP, late last week Banks stopped to assist occupants of a truck which had slide off of Interstate I77 near Parkersburg, West Virginia. A few moments later, Banks was hit when another vehicle slid as well. More…

In 2015 there were three traffic fatalities and 13 for the year through September. The five fatalities this year are the lowest since the Richland County Safe Communities Coalition began keeping records in 2004.
