Practical resources for parents, an amazing free dinner and a raffle for gift cards will be featured at the Mansfield Middle School Parent Fair on Thursday, November 16.

The 5:30 to 8 PM program is open to all parents of students in grades seven through 12. Free child care will be provided for toilet-trained 3-year-olds and other children up to age 10.

Registration for the fair is required by November 9. Registration forms were sent home with students earlier. They also are available on the Mansfield Middle School page on the tygerpride.com web site. Participants are asked to arrive by 5:15 PM to register for raffle prizes and locate their first session.

“We depend on parents to help us with the education of their children,” said teacher Patricia Lilley, who is spearheading plans for the fair. “We have professional development for our staff so we thought why not offer professional development for parents in the form of resources they can use.”

The fair schedule includes:

  • Session A — 5:30-6 p.m.
  • Dinner – 6-6:30 p.m.
  • Session B – 6:35-7:05 p.m.
  • Session C – 7:10-7:40 p.m.
  • Raffle/parent survey – 7:40-8 p.m.

Dinner in the commons area will feature spaghetti, chicken alfredo, whole wheat pasta with pesto sauce, salad, rolls and cake. During the dinner period, Deborah Dubois and Lisa Salyers of the Mansfield-Richland County Public Library will explain resources available at the library. Soloists form the middle school choir will entertain.

Session speakers include:

  • “Social media introduction and dangers of media,” Fayette Adams, director of technology for City Mills, Mansfield City Schools’ technology provider.
  • “Drugs and your child,” Resource Officer Mark Perry of the Mansfield Police Department.
  • “Grow your brain: How learning affects the brain,” Bianca Horsley, middle school teacher.
  • “Building a relationship with your child/What to do with a defiant child,” Joy Moore, Catalyst Life Services
  • “Strategies to help your child to achieve success in school and in their careers,” Todd Hoovler, middle school teacher.

The fair is sponsored by the Making Middle Grades Work committee.
