Each year, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day honors Dr. King’s legacy by providing an opportunity for Americans to renew their own personal vows of citizenship through service to others and engagement in conversations to advance community goals. In Richland County, a January 20 Community Breakfast and Celebration has been planned.
The program will begin at 8:30 AM at is being held at Mansfield Senior High School. Tickets, which include a buffet-style catered breakfast, are priced at $5. Tickets may be purchased at the Mansfield City Schools’ Raemelton administration building (856 West Cook Road, Mansfield), weekdays from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, or on the tygerpride.com website (click “online ticketing” on the lower left-hand side of the page). Note that ticket sales will close on January 10, and only a small number of tickets will be available at the door.
Special T-shirts, in both youth and adult sizes and priced at just $7, have been designed for the event and may be ordered through January 15. To see the design and to place an order, go here.
The theme of the January 20 program will be “We Are One CommUNITY.” Dr. Austin McCoy, a 1999 Mansfield Senior High graduate and current assistant professor at Auburn University, will be the keynote speaker. Several community speakers will be featured, along with presentations by the Senior High choir, the Black Culture Club and students in kindergarten through sixth grade.
“We are planning an inspiring program to honor the legacy of Dr. King while emphasizing unity throughout our community as we move forward in 2020 and the new decade ahead,” said Mansfield City Schools Superintendent Stan Jefferson.
The event is sponsored by Mansfield City Schools in cooperation with its community partners, including the North End Community Improvement Collaborative, Ohio State University-Mansfield and North Central State College.
Among the local officials scheduled to attend are Mansfield Mayor Tim Theaker; Richland County Commissioners Marilyn John, Darrell Banks and Tony Vero; and state Representative Mark Romanchuk.
