This Saturday, Gorman Nature Center (GNC) in Mansfield is offering a Family Friendly Bird Day full of activities to engage and excite kids and adults alike. This is a great wintertime opportunity to connect with nature! Here are the planned activities:

Breakfast with the Birds: The first part of the day will begin at 8:00 AM with a light breakfast and bird watching. (Donations will be accepted to cover the cost of breakfast.)

A Bird in the Hand: From 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Steve McKee will offer a “bird’s eye” view of winter birds and bird banding. McKee is a former federal bird bander; he will catch the birds at the GNC feeders and apply numbered metal bands to their legs. He will explain how the bands allow for tracking migration patterns and other bird research.

All throughout the day, the Great Backyard Bird Count is also taking place. Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society, the Great Backyard Bird Count was the first online citizens-science project to collect data on wild birds and also display the results in near real-time. If you are unable to join this event at GNC, you can bird watch in your own backyard and submit your results online at birdcount.org. This program runs from February 14 – 17.
