We’re beginning a new series here at 1812Blockhouse, just in time for the beauty of a north central Ohio spring.
It’s called “Take a Hike,” and it is exactly that. With each post, we’ll be featuring a walk or organized hike you can take by yourself, with groups, or with your favorite furry friend. In each case, they will be located within Richland County and will be generally accessible to the public, or easily made available.

A local not for profit support group has changed its name to more closely match its mission, while unveiling a new website to more clearly tell that story.
This past week, the Friends of Gorman Nature Center announced its new name, Friends of the Richland County Park District on social media. The change was effective December 7.
According to the announcement, “The Friends provides volunteer assistance, along with the coordination and financial support for programs and events that take place at all areas covered by the Richland County Park District. More…

An annual event that celebrates all things creepy-crawley that also fly will be taking place this weekend with the 7th Annual Richland County Park District Pollinator & Native Plant Festival.
The event actually begins on Wednesday with the visit of Fran LeMasters and her “All a Flutter” live butterfly exhibit, which you can actually physically enter and have the opportunity to interact with native butterfly species. Come inside and visit live butterflies from the caterpillar, larvae, and flying stage, including feeding.
LeMasters will be at the Gorman Nature Center from Tuesday through Sunday, 9 AM to 4 PM (on Thursday, the hours will be somewhat limited due to another event at the Center. More…

This Saturday, the Richland County Park District will be offering two opportunities to get to know the outdoors.
First, Naturalist Kyle Bailey will be hosting the second Magnificent Moths and Caterpillar program of the season. Learn about the natural history of months through a “moth lighting” — setting out a sheet with lights to attract the flying insects and then inspecting the property for larval caterpillars. The stars come alive under Richland County skies during “The Night Sky,” a monthly astronomy program hosted by the Richland County Park District at Gorman Nature Center in Mansfield.
