Many decades ago, a motorist was heading east on West Fourth Street in Mansfield. He or she was nearing the location where the current Mansfield Senior High School now sits, home to the then-Mansfield High School constructed in 1927. Not too far from the current home of the Mid Ohio Educational Service Center, the video camera started to roll.

Fast forward to the present, and that footage has been “colorized” and made available to view.

The colorization of black and white films has evolved from manual, hand-painted techniques  to sophisticated digital processes that involve carefully coloring each pixel in the image. The process is used to bring classic films to life for contemporary audiences.

The NASS YouTube channel regularly posts restored and upscaled older videos which are enhanced with modern software tools. Last week, it shared a video entitled “Ohio 1930s in color, driving in downtowns and rural areas [60fps, Remastered] w/sound design added.” In it, rural and more urban Ohio scenes are captured in the very early part of that decade.

At the 3:30 time mark, the above-described scene in Mansfield appears on the screen and lasts for approximately 40 seconds. Billboards that appear include one for “Mud Gardner’s” Buick dealership at 116 Park Avenue West. Also visible are many houses which have long since disappeared.

Enjoy this trip to Mansfield’s past, which can be viewed here.
