A collaborative effort between the Mansfield/Richland County Main Library and the Greater Cleveland Food Bank is making a significant impact on child hunger through the Backpack Meals Program. This initiative targets children under 18, providing them with nutritious meals to take home over the weekend, a critical time when school meals are unavailable.
How the Program Works
Every Thursday at 4:30 PM beginning this week, at the Main Library, children and their families can pick up a free Backpack Meal bag. These bags are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis and are available during the library’s open hours while supplies last. The program is designed with the utmost respect for privacy and confidentiality, ensuring that the children’s identities are protected while they receive assistance.

The bags are carefully packed with a balance of nutrients to see the children through the weekend. Each Backpack Meal bag includes:
- Two breakfast items: Options such as cereal, oatmeal, or granola bars provide a healthy start to the day.
- Two entrees: Child-friendly, easy-to-prepare meals like mac and cheese, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, or canned soup offer sustenance and comfort.
- Bread and dairy or juice: Essential for well-rounded meals.
- Fresh or canned fruits and vegetables: These are included to ensure a good intake of vitamins and minerals.
- Two snacks: For energy throughout the day.
The Urgent Need for Food Security
Food insecurity is a pressing issue in Ohio, affecting over 1.3 million residents, including 386,430 children. The Backpack Meals Program is part of a broader strategy to address this crisis, which calls for policy changes, increased funding for food assistance programs, and more community-driven solutions like this one.
A Call to Action
As food insecurity continues to be a significant challenge, initiatives like the Backpack Meals Program are vital in ensuring that no child goes hungry, especially over the weekends. Community involvement and continued support for such programs are crucial for their success and expansion.
