An innovative program at the Mansfield/Richland County Public Library (MRCPL) is transforming lives through the power of literacy. The Adult Literacy Program is a beacon of hope for adults striving to overcome the hurdles posed by low literacy skills. With a commitment to fostering educational growth and personal achievement, this initiative is not just about learning to read; it’s about unlocking a world of possibilities.

A Journey Toward Literacy

The Adult Literacy Program at MRCPL is tailored for adults 18 and over residing in Richland County, aiming to elevate their basic reading abilities to new heights. By pairing learners with trained volunteer tutors, the program opens doors to a myriad of opportunities, including obtaining a GED/high school diploma, enhancing job search capabilities, and even the simple joy of reading to their children. This initiative underscores the library’s dedication to not only enhancing literacy but also empowering individuals to achieve their full potential.

Interested participants are encouraged to reach out to Steve Russell, the Workforce Development Coordinator, signaling the beginning of a transformative journey towards literacy and beyond.

The Heart of the Program: Volunteer Tutors

The success of the Adult Literacy Program hinges on the passion and dedication of its volunteer tutors. These compassionate individuals commit to a ten-week session, offering one-hour weekly lessons that make a significant impact on their learners’ lives. Before embarking on this rewarding journey, volunteers undergo comprehensive training to equip them with the skills and methods necessary for effective tutoring.

Volunteers are required to be at least 18 years of age, willing to undergo a background check, and complete three hours of tutor training. This meticulous preparation ensures that every tutor is ready to provide the support and encouragement their learners need to succeed.

A Unique Opportunity for Ohio Seniors

In a special initiative aimed at Ohioans aged 60 and over, the Give Back Go Forward program offers a unique opportunity to give back to the community while earning free college tuition. Volunteers who dedicate 100 or more community service hours at designated nonprofits can earn a voucher for three free undergraduate credit hours at The Ohio State University. This initiative not only incentivizes community service among Ohio seniors but also fosters a culture of lifelong learning and civic engagement.
