Preliminary June 2022 unemployment rates ranged from a low of 2.9% in Mercer County to a high of 6.4% in Cuyahoga County according to figures released on Tuesday from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. From May, unemployment rates increased in all 88 counties.
Eleven counties had unemployment rates at or below 3.5%, including Mercer, Holmes, Putnam, Wyandot, Auglaize, Delaware, Union, Hancock, Madison, Preble, and Wayne.
North Central Ohio counties had the following reported rates of unemployment:
- Crawford – 5.0%
- Richland – 4.5%
- Huron – 4.4%
- Morrow – 3.9%
- Ashland – 3.8%
- Knox – 3.8%
For the metropolitan Mansfield area, nonfarm payroll employment totaled 50,500 in June 2022, an increase of 500 jobs from May. Employment in goods-producing industries, at 11,800, increased 300 in mining, logging, and construction (+200) and manufacturing (+100). Private service-providing employment, at 31,600, increased 400 with gains in leisure and hospitality (+200), professional and business services (+100), and other services (+100). Government employment, at 7,100, decreased 200 in local government due to seasonal losses in educational services.
Ohio’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.9% in June, unchanged from May. Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment decreased 11,300 over the month, from a revised 5,476,700 in May to 5,465,400 in June 2022.
The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in June was 224,000, down from 226,000 in May. The number of unemployed has decreased by 81,000 in the past 12 months from 305,000. The June unemployment rate for Ohio decreased from 5.3% in June 2021. The U.S. unemployment rate for June 2022 was 3.6%, unchanged from 3.6% in May 2022, and down from 5.9% in June 2021.
In June 2022, the labor force participation rate in Ohio was 62.0%, unchanged from May and up from 61.7% in June 2021. During the same period, the national labor force participation rate was 62.2%, down from 62.3% in May 2022 and up from 61.6% in June 2021.
