At its upcoming meeting on May 18, Mansfield City Council will be considered two pieces of legislation dealing with public art.

The first, which is set for “caucus only,” would establishing a new Chapter 177 (Public Arts Commission) of the City of Mansfield Codified Ordinance, and authorize the creation of such a Commission.

According to ordinance, the new body will “administer, promote, facilitate, and oversee the creation of public arts projects that will promote the cultural heritage and artistic development of the City, enhance the City’s character and identity, contribute to economic development and tourism, and warm, dignity, beauty, and accessibility to public spaces, and expand the experience and participation of citizens with visual arts.”

This will be accomplished through the creation of a Public Art Master Plan. Members of the body will serve three year terms.

The body will act in an advisory capacity to the Certified Building Division in their granting or not granting a permit under Section 1339.29 of the Codified Ordinances.

A second ordinance creating that permitting process under Section 1339.29 will also be under consideration on a voting basis. That proposed ordinance creates a mural permitting procedure in which the new Public Arts Commission will play a part as outlined above.
