The Ohio Department of Transporation (ODOT) has been talking what it calls “active modes of transportation” as of late — walking and biking in particular.

To that end, the Department has taken research into these areas and input from meetings with stakeholders and created a plan of action. You are now invited to join in that process.

ODOT has released Walk.Bike.Ohio, Ohio’s first statewide plan for active modes of transportation. The themes, strategies and action steps contained in Walk.Bike.Ohio will address the plan’s goals of safety, equity, network connectivity, network utilization, preservation and quality of life. So many of our residents depend on walking or bicycling to remain mobile and connected; and so many also are choosing and prioritizing healthy, sustainable lifestyles.

ODOT invites your feedback on this draft plan. Your feedback and comments are essential to ensure Walk.Bike.Ohio outlines the key steps ODOT and its partners should take to improve the safety and comfort of pedestrians and bicyclists throughout the state.

Ultimately this plan establishes a framework for enhanced coordination, ensuring walking and bicycling in Ohio is a safe, convenient and accessible transportation option for everyone.

The Statewide Bike and Pedestrian Plan can  be accessed here.

Mansfield and Richland County are included in maps which can be used to compare our area with others in these fields. That data shows, for instance, that Richland County has a high need for active transportation facilities, but only moderate demand.

Action steps identified in the study include assisting local communities in project development and implementation; supporting regional, cross-jurisdictional active transportation projects, and creting a state and national bike route system.

After reviewing the draft, please share your feedback by taking a brief survey at: PublicInput.com/Walk.Bike.Ohio by Friday, February 26.
