The economic slowdown continued to wreak havoc in Ohio during the week ending May 9 with an additional 51,125 Ohioans filing initial jobless claims, a report from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services sharedthis week.

During the last two months, over 1.16 million claimants have filed in Ohio, and over $2.4 billion in unemployment checks have gone to almost 60,000 people. In typical years, the number of filings is a third of that amount.

Processing has become much more efficient, as 90% of applications received have been fully processed.

Without outside funding or transfers from within, the State’s unemployment fund is likely to be completely gone within a handful of weeks.

For self-employed and other types of Ohio workers not covered under traditional unemployment pgrams, the new Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program is available and can provide $600 weekly payments for a limited time.

Ohioans who believe that they might be eligible for the PUA should visit pua.unemployment.ohio.gov and click the button that says “Click Here to Apply for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance.”

More information on the PUA can be found below and here.

The state’s April 2020 unemployment report, which is being looked at in many quarters as an indicator of how difficult the impact of COVID-19 has been on the economy, is to be released on Friday, May 22. Then, on Wednesday, May 27, the substate report will be available showing county and metro area unemployment statistics.
