This Saturday, January 25, is the Chinese New Year. The day is China’s largest holiday and it is celebrated by more than 20 percent of the population worldwide. In Chinese culture, each year is characterized by one of 12 animals; and 2020 is the Year of the Rat, which symbolizes wealth and the beginning of a new day.
Youth interested in learning more about Chinese culture have a wonderful opportunity locally; the Mansfield/Richland County Public Library has organized a Chinese Culture Series for grades 6-12.
Running during the month of February, Yanhong Bai, from OSU Mansfield, will educate on several topics at the Main Branch (downtown Mansfield). Below is a listing; each class is from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM.
- Monday, February 3 – Chinese Culture
- Monday, February 10 – Daily Life
- Monday, February 17 – Art and Education
- Monday, February 24 – Environment and Folk/Herbal Chinese Medicine
To end the month, a Chinese Spring Festival with crafts, games and food will be held on Saturday, February 29, also from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM.
