The Board of Directors for the Richland County Regional Solid Waste Management Authority has approved funding for two $500 grants to be provided to local schools. The grants will be awarded to student projects that are focused on bringing awareness to the areas of reduce, reuse or recycle.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle campaign: Commonly referred to as the waste hierarchy, “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” refers to the environmentally-friendly guidance to first reduce (use less overall), then reuse (if you use something, find a way to use it again), and finally recycle (if you cannot reuse it again, allow it to be turned into something new rather than throwing it out).

Schools are encouraged to apply for the grants by February 28. The application can be found on the Richland County Regional Solid Waste Management Authority website here.  All applications submitted will be reviewed by the Board at their March 11 meeting; the Board then plans to announce the winning projects on March 12.

The Board is excited to use this new type of opportunity to reach out to the youth of Richland County. The hope is that the projects will bring awareness to the options to reduce, reuse or recycle items, thereby cutting down on waste and helping to conserve energy and resources.
