While some areas saw a rise in activity, including homicide, rape, and auto thefts, Mansfield officials are emphasizing that “overall” crime was down 4.4% in the third quarter of 2016. Police Chief Kenneth Coontz released those numbers earlier this week.

The numbers for service calls and crime were compiled by the Records and Data Section of the Mansfield Division of Police.

The news release shared that “…offenses reported as crime statistics are determined by the FBI Uniform Crime Report program and are classified as crimes against persons (violent crime) and crimes against property. The offense of murder (homicide), rape, robbery, and assault make up the violent crime category. The offenses of arson, burglary, larceny, and auto theft make up the property crime category. Both of these categories are referred to as Part 1 Offenses.”

The 4.4% overall decrease relates to the fact that Mansfield Police officers responded to 2,097 purported Part 1 Offense violations, down from 2,194 the year before. The number of reported accidents decreased by a similar percentage, from 1077 in 2015 to 1014 in third quarter 2016.

Specific areas and activity were as follows during the quarter (area, percent change, 2016 figure, 2015 figure):

Homicide – up 50% — 3, 2

Rapes – up 38.3% — 65, 47

Robberies – down 15.5% — 49, 58

Assaults – down 18.9% — 47, 58

Arson – up 41.6% — 17, 12

Burglaries – down 5.8% — 535, 568

Larcenies – down 5.9% — 1297, 1379

Auto thefts – up 20% — 84, 70
