Martese Roulette wanted to travel but wasn’t sure how he would be able to while attending classes as a student at The Ohio State University at Mansfield. Then he found out about an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. Ohio State Mansfield students are able to take advantage of a Student Travel Grant to help cover some expenses while studying abroad in either Cyprus or Corfu, Greece.
At Ohio State University, students are able to gain education abroad experiences by taking classes through an exchange program or foreign university, complete an independent study program or service learning project, conduct research or participate in an internship program.
Roulette, a sophomore architecture major, chose to join a group traveling to Corfu lead by Ohio State Mansfield Professor Steven Joyce. Roulette says, “I have always wanted to see the world and learn about different cultures.” He spent four weeks during the summer session in Corfu. “Being in Greece and having the hands-on learning experience has made learning about western civilization amazing,” Roulette explains. “I was able to make new friends, and I will cherish these memories.”
With the help of two scholarships, including the Mansfield Student Travel Grant, he was able to have help funding his education abroad.
During his time in Corfu, Roulette was able to gain class credit while experiencing a new culture. “It was an opportunity for me to explore different aspects of the world,” he says. “We had a Greek professor for our lectures, and we were able to visit some of the well-known historic areas of Greece.”
The Introduction to Western Tradition and Contemporary Issues course gives students the opportunity to visit museums while studying archeological sites and learning about western civilization and modern issues in European society. “My favorite memory would be seeing the Acropolis in Athens, Greece,” he exclaims. It is an ancient city located above the city of Athens and contains the remains of several ancient buildings with great architectural and historical significance, the most famous being the Parthenon.

They can help you explore all of the available programs that will fit your academic plan. Roulette says, “If you are thinking about studying abroad, do it. I would suggest you go explore everywhere you are able to as many times as possible. I wish I did more, but am so happy I was able to meet and make friends along the way.”
There are several scholarships available to help students who wish to study abroad. You must be formally accepted into the Education Abroad program through the Office of International Affairs before aid can be determined.
