From the Mansfield Division of Police:

On Thursday at 9:26 AM the Mansfield Division of Police responded to a call of a suspicious device at 41 Rowland Ave..

The complainant, who is renting the property, advised that he was cleaning out a shed in the backyard and discovered a mortar round leaning against the wall. Officers confirmed the presence of the mortar round and immediately evacuated the surrounding area and contacted the Ashland County Bomb Squad for assistance. The Mansfield Fire Department was also on scene as a precautionary measure.

The Ashland County Bomb Squad collected the device and removed it from the premises.

The mortar round was found to be a luminary shell used to light up a battle field and did not contain explosives. No other suspicious devices were located on the property.

The incident will be followed up by the Major Crimes Unit.
