HEAP Helps Ohioans

Do you need help paying for winter heating bills?

HEAP may be able to help you. HEAP benefits are applied to an individual’s energy bill after January 1.

Applications for the HEAP program must be received by May 31, 2023. The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) helps Ohioans at or below 175 percent of the federal poverty guidelines pay their heating bills. Anyone age 18 and older may apply for this assistance.  Those 60 & over can get assistance with filling out the application. All heating types are eligible for energy assistance programs – Electric, Wood, Coal, Natural Gas, Propane and Kerosene.

Funding Will Expand Area Agency On Aging Programming

CareSource, a nationally recognized nonprofit health plan, has donated $1,000,000.00 to The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging, Inc. (AAA5).

The gift will provide AAA5 the opportunity to expand the programs that will reach vulnerable individuals of all ages, demographics, and communities within Ashland, Crawford, Huron, Knox, Marion, Morrow, Richland, Seneca, and Wyandot Counties. The AAA5 understands CareSource’s mission is one that involves the heart; eliminate poverty, provide much-needed services to low-and moderate-income families, encourage healthy communities, develop innovative approaches to address critical health issues, and enhance the lives of a diverse array of children, adults, and families.

AAA5 will expand the current Helping Elderly Meet Essential Needs (HEMEN) program under this funding. HEMEN is designed with the intent to provide one-time essential items needed to help individuals remain safe and independent in the home that are often not covered by other programs and/or funding sources.

Area Agency On Aging Providing Free Smoke Detectors During October

The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging, Inc. will distribute free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to residents of Richland County that are age 60 and older at a Fire Prevention Month Awareness event on Friday, October 28 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Hawkins Corner, located at 2131 Park Avenue West, Door 300, in Ontario. 

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), fire departments in the United States respond to a fire event every 24 seconds. Anyone can experience a fire, but older adults are especially vulnerable. 

Area Agency on Aging staff and representatives from Richland County fire departments will be on-site to provide fire prevention resources and installation information.

Summer Crisis Program Starts July 1

The Ohio Department of Development and Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging, Inc. will help income-eligible Ohioans stay cool during the hot summer months. The Home Energy Assistance Summer Crisis Program provides eligible Ohioans assistance paying an electric bill or assistance paying for central air conditioning repairs. The program runs from July 1 until September 30.

To apply for the program, clients are required to schedule an appointment with the Community Action Commission of Richland and Huron by calling 419-901-9539.

The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging, Inc. has announced that its Repurposing Vacant City Lots into Affordable Housing Program recently received a 2021 Aging Innovations Award from the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a), the highest honor presented by n4a to member agencies. The awards program is supported by iN2L, provider of the leading engagement and social connection platform for seniors, offering a foundation for activities that facilitate social interaction, cognitive and physical exercise, education, reminiscing, areas of interest, and memory support engagement.

Repurposing Vacant City Lots into Affordable Housing Program, which addresses a critical need for safe and affordable housing for aging adults through an innovative development of Ritter’s Run Apartments. This program was among the top 15 of 36 local aging programs to receive honors during the n4a Annual Conference and Tradeshow, July 19-22. More…

Area Agency On Aging Hosting Senior Spring Extravaganza

The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging, Inc. will hold a Senior Spring Extravaganza on May 24 at 10:00 AM at the Richland County Fairgrounds in Mansfield. This event, hosted by the Area Agency on Aging, is held in recognition of Older Americans Month, and offers guests entertainment, refreshments, information regarding aging issues, and a chance to win door prizes.

The Area Agency on Aging wants to bring our communities back together again with the theme being Communities of Strength. This year, we want to celebrate our senior citizens with a drive-thru festival. Tickets are free and must be presented the day of the event. Tickets are limited. Local Seniors Get Assistance In Acquiring Fresh Fruit, Vegetables, And Honey

On Wednesday, Ohio District Five Area Agency on Aging announced the availability of the Ohio Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) is three counties in north central Ohio — Richland, Knox, and Seneca.

Eligible participants receive ten $5 coupons to use a participating farmers’ markets and roadside stands.

This program helps low-income seniors access locally grown and fresh fruits and vegetables, while also supporting local farmers and those running farmers’ markets. More…
