Richland County EMA is collaborating with the National Weather Service (NWS) to host the annual Skywarn Spotter Training. This event is essential for those interested in contributing to community safety during severe weather events. The training session is scheduled for Monday, April 15, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, at Pioneer Career and Technology Center in Shelby. Participants can look forward to not just learning but also enjoying light refreshments and the chance to win door prizes.

The training covers several critical topics, including:

  • Basics of Thunderstorm Development
  • Fundamentals of Storm Structure
  • Identifying Potential Severe Weather Features
  • Basic Severe Weather Safety

These topics are designed to equip attendees with the knowledge to report severe weather accurately, aiding the NWS in their forecasting and warning processes.

SKYWARN® is a national network of volunteer weather spotters who play a crucial role in their communities. They report severe weather, helping the NWS to make accurate forecasts and timely warnings. With over 350,000 volunteers nationwide, this network is vital for enhancing weather safety.

The training is free and open to all, including individuals from outside Richland County. Preregistration is necessary and can be done through the NWS’s official site. This is an opportunity for community members to actively contribute to local safety during severe weather incidents.

The Skywarn Spotter Training offers an invaluable opportunity for residents of Richland County and beyond to actively engage in their community’s safety. It’s a call to action for anyone looking to make a meaningful difference when severe weather strikes.
