Special to 1812Blockhouse

To mark National Falls Prevention Awareness Day, Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging, Inc., in partnership with STEADY U Ohio, the initiative led by the Ohio Department of Aging and supported by Ohio government and state business partners, will hold three walking events, “10 Million Steps to Prevent Falls!

Individuals can join us at any event taking place on September 22nd.  The Area Agency on Aging is proud to partner with the following:

  • Avita and Richland Public Health at 10:00 AM held at the Richland Mall (2209 Richland Mall in Ontario)
  • Marion Technical College at 10:00 AM held at the Marion Technical College campus (1467 Mt Vernon Ave in Marion)
  • YMCA at 1:00 PM held at the Mansfield YMCA (750 Scholl Rd. in Mansfield).

Participants can join in for a one-mile fitness walk and learn what you or your older loved ones can do to reduce the risk of a potentially life-changing fall. The number of participants and miles walked at this event will be counted toward the state’s goal of 10 million steps statewide.

In addition to the walk, participants will also receive strategies and tips for falls prevention. They will have the opportunity to sign up for wellness workshops which can reduce the risk of falls. Participation in all three events is completely free. All are invited, and no RSVP is required.

“10 Million Steps to Prevent Falls” is a statewide effort to raise awareness of falls prevention for older adults. The STEADY U Ohio initiative aims to get at least 4,000 Ohioans to walk one mile or more in the name of falls prevention on or around National Falls Prevention Awareness Day, September 22.  Visit www.steadyu.ohio.gov for falls prevention resources and tips.
