Historical Context: Father’s Day

Father’s Day, taking place this year on June 16, is an annual celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. Here’s a brief history of this cherished day:

  • Origins: The modern Father’s Day celebration was founded in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd in Spokane, Washington. Inspired by the Mother’s Day celebrations, Dodd wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children as a single parent.
  • National Holiday: It became a permanent national holiday in the United States in 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed it into law, solidifying its importance and recognition.

Join the Celebration

Don’t miss this opportunity to celebrate fatherhood and create lasting memories with your family and the community. The “Picnic with Pop” is more than just an event; it’s a tribute to the dads who make a difference in our lives.
