From the detailed strokes of a tiny brush to the sweeping movements of an artist lost in their work, watercolor painting is an multifaceted art form. Through August 13, the Mansfield Art Center is hosting the Ohio Watercolor Society’s (OWS) annual juried competition, an event that immerses visitors in a world brimming with creativity, talent, and the potent storytelling of aqueous painting.

Advancing the Stature of Watercolor

The Ohio Watercolor Society has been instrumental in fostering a greater appreciation and interest in watercolor painting among the general public and individual artists alike. Its mission revolves around elevating watercolor to its rightful place as a major painting medium. By organizing workshops, critiques, demonstrations, lectures, and publishing newsletters, OWS offers Ohio residents valuable insights and education into the area of aqueous painting.

An Exceptional Showcase of Talent and Diversity

The annual juried competition, “Watercolor Ohio 2023,” is a testament to the thriving talent, diversity, and enthusiasm of artists working with water soluble mediums. Whether it be watercolor, acrylic, casein, gouache, or egg tempera, each painting is a unique exploration of the medium’s limitless possibilities.

Renowned guest juror, Stan Miller, faced the challenging task of selecting 75 exceptional works from a whopping 248 entries submitted by 157 artists hailing not only from Ohio but also from areas along its borders. This selection is evidence of the highly competitive nature of the event, reflecting the passion and ambition of the artists participating.

Celebrating Artists at The Mansfield Art Center

This gathering, hosted by both the Ohio Watercolor Society and The Mansfield Art Center, serves as an excellent opportunity for attendees to interact with the artists and perhaps gain a deeper understanding of their works and inspirations.

The event offers an invaluable opportunity to learn, appreciate, and explore the vibrancy and versatility of water soluble mediums. The annual juried competition is not only a celebration of the artists’ works but also a testament to the Ohio Watercolor Society’s dedication to advancing the stature of watercolor as a major painting medium.
