On December 3, 1947, the play A Streetcar Named Desire, written by Tennessee Williams, opened on Broadway.

75 years later to the day, the Theatre Department of The Ohio State University at Mansfield will present a stage reading of this remarkable icon of American theatre.

In the play, Blanche DuBois relocates to New Orleans, home of her younger sister and brother-in-law, Stella and Stanley Kowalski. Trapped in a world of romantic illusions, Blanche is unable to cope with life’s harsh realities. The conflict between Blanche and Stanley builds to the play’s explosive climax and shattering ending.

This special performance will take place on Saturday, December 3 at 7PM in Founders Auditorium on the campus of OSUM. There is no charge to attend this event

Looking ahead, the Theatre Department has two additional productions this academic year. In the spring it will present:

  • Poof by Lynn Nottage and other short works for, by, and about strong women
  • The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) by Adam Long, Daniel Singer, Jess Winfield

The Theatre Program at Ohio State Mansfield is a division of the Department of Theatre, Film, and Media Arts on the Columbus Campus. Here students can start work toward a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, or they can complete a minor in theatre while pursuing another major field. From building sets to directing shows, it offers many opportunities to experience the thrilling and unique education of working in live theatre.
