U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown has announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded a $6,023,701 grant to the city of Mansfield to reconstruct the apron and taxilane at Mansfield Lahm Regional Airport.

“Ohio airports are vital infrastructure supporting travel and commerce in our state,” Brown said. “These federal investments are great news for the region and will enhance safety and operations at Mansfield Lahm and improve travel for area residents and businesses.”

The FAA supports public-use airports included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems through the Airport Improvement Program. The program supports projects that improve airport safety, capacity, security, and lessen environmental impact.

The current program was established by the Airport and Airway Improvement Act of 1982 (Public Law 97-248). Since then, the AIP has been amended several times, most recently with the passage of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012. Funds obligated for the AIP are drawn from the Airport and Airway Trust fund, which is supported by user fees, fuel taxes, and other similar revenue sources.

In a related note, Mansfield City Council approved two pieces of legislation that could lead to north side economic growth, Richland Source reported on Wednesday (post can be read here). The actions involved a tax abatement for a new 8,000 square foot industrial building, as well as a sale which may lead to construction of a “spec” building, both near the airport.
