Ohio’s Best Journalism Contest, sponsored by the Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) chapters statewide, has announced its 2021 awards. There were 255 awards announced out of 580 entries submitted.

One of our fellow Richland County news publications, the Shelby Daily Globe, took home three of those honors.

The categories include large circulation print (60,000 or greater), small circulation print (fewer than 60,000), radio, television, digital media, trade organizations, freelance and college.

Best of Show distinctions are awarded in all categories except college. Entries were for work done in 2020. Journalists who work for newspaper, magazines, radio, television, trade, online and college media in Ohio and adjacent states that have significant reach into Ohio were eligible to submit entries, as well as freelance journalists who are Ohio residents, regardless of where their work was published, broadcast or webcast. Entrants did not need to be members of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Ohio’s Best Journalism is the only Ohio competition that honors journalists who fulfill the SPJ mission: defense of the First Amendment, support of literacy, resistance to censorship, advocacy for openness of public records and meetings, media self-criticism and community service.

Journalists from the Indiana SPJ Contest served as judges. Many thanks for your patience as we had hoped to announce winners earlier this month.

The Shelby Daily Globe was awarded one first-place honor and two second place honors. The top award in Ohio went to the Daily Globe for “Best Criminal Justice Reportings,” while the two second place awards were for “Best Government Reporting” and “Best Website.”

Two publications whose stories we regularly carry on 1812Blockhouse also won. Eye on Ohio received seven awards, and the Ohio Capital Journal won two. Columbus Underground, like us a member of LION Publishers, won 11 honors, and The Land, a new LION member, won another.

Hearty congratulations to these publications from 1812Blockhouse!
