The competition for healthcare services continues unabated west of Mansfield, as construction of a new OhioHealth facility is underway at the same time that Avita Health Ontario Hospital has opened to the public.

Last year, OhioHealth Corp. announced the pending cosntruction of a $5.3 million freestanding emergency department. Construction equipment has arrived at the site, along Lexington-Springmill Road immediately in front of Meijer.

This work parallels trauma center and ER work being done at OhioHealth Hospitals in Mansfield and Shelby, and extended hours at a nearby OhioHealth urgent care facility.

The new ER in Ontario is set for a mid 2017 opening. It features eight patient bays in 8,000 square feet of space. Open 24 hours a day, it will be staffed by emergency medicine physicians and nurses.

In a press release, Jean Halpin, President of the Mansfield and Shelby Hospitals, shared, ““The investments in Ontario, Mansfield and Shelby will improve emergency care in the community by providing better access for patients,” said Halpin. “In the past two years, we significantly reduced the average time that it takes a patient to see an emergency physician from 120 minutes to 31 minutes at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. We hope to bring those minutes down further with the addition of an emergency department in Ontario.”
