This past summer, The Tinker Table arrived at the Mansfield/Richland County Public Library’s Main Library.

This month, the entire world heard all about it.

The website of the International Federal of Library Associations and Institutions has included a profile of a simple yet successful “makerspace” tool to engage patrons and visitors with the world of science. Authored by Anne Curran Rhodes, the piece looks at what she refers to as “the Tinker Table, small space in the lobby for a table, some chairs and a stand that displays a colorful sign and also holds activities and worksheets. It is simple in design and execution but speaks volumes about our desire for our customers to see our library as a destination for exploration and experiment.”

The author also discussed the programming piece that followed installation of the Tinker Table, known as “Tuesday Tinker Night.” Participation has grown from 10 to 30 patrons per week, and the space has expanded.

It’s an interesting read and can be accessed here.

According to its website, the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions is the leading international body representing the interests of library and information services and their users. It is the global voice of the library and information profession.
