The lights started going up in central Mansfield in September, put up by dozens of electricians. According to nottinghampost.com, 0ver 300 miniature Christmas trees, 100 decorated columns, half a mile of icicle-style lights across storefronts, lights strung across streets, and even a “light curtain” in one corner were installed. All of these to add to a 30 foot community Christmas tree ready to welcome some 10,000 people each day through Christmas.

The decorations were activated on November 17 in an event called the big “Switch On.”

Oh – and did we mention the laser light show and giant fireworks display?

It’s 1812Blockhouse’s annual holiday visit to Mansfield, England – Mansfield, Ohio’s sister city located in the county of Nottinghamshire, and place where yuletide festivities take center stage beginning in November.

You can see a wonderful gallery of photos from the event here in “The Chad” and also below via a local radio station.

This holiday season in Mansfield you can enjoy a Christmas Market at the Mansfield Museum with 40 stalls, live music, and a Christmas Tree Festival; engage in making Christmas-themed felt decorations at the Mansfield Central Library; or attend the Christmas Artisan and Craft Market that includes a “Planet Friendly Christmas Market” with traders featuring eco-friendly items, gifts, and food.

This year’s pantomime at the Mansfield Palace Theatre — a staple of English holiday celebrations — is “Cinderella” (more info and tickets available here).

Mansfield is a city of slightly over 100,000 population with a settlement history dating back to Roman times. In the Domesday Book, the community was recorded as Mammesfeld, which spelling changed to Mannesfeld by 1377. It lies adjacent to the famous Sherwood Forest of Robin Hood fame.
