Parenting a child with special needs can be an isolating experience, one aspect of which is often feeling unable to relate to other parents because of the unique nature of raising a differently abled child. Richland Newhope (the Richland County Board of Developmental Disabilities) wants to address this issue by connecting parents of special needs children through their Parent to Parent networking group.
No matter the age of the child, this group will help parents to receive support from, or give support to, others who are on the same journey. The goal is not only to be able to share information, resources, strategies, and tips; but also to laugh, cry and be able to say things that only parents of individuals with special needs will understand. Although there are a plethora of online support groups, Richland Newhope’s Parent to Parent networking group can help parents not only receive vital emotional support, but also receive practical guidance from local residents who are familiar with local resources.
The first meeting, held in August, was a success and the next meeting is scheduled for September 25 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
