Josh Lyons felt the love and support of his school Thursday morning as he left for the Division II state wrestling tournament in Columbus.

Students, faculty and staff lined the walls of Mansfield Senior High’s upper level hallway, applauding and cheering as Lyons walked ahead of a congratulatory banner and the Tyger marching band.

Lyons, who wrestles at 126 pounds, punched his ticket to Columbus by placing third in the district tournament at Norwalk on Saturday. He recorded his 100th victory at Norwalk, and is just the eighth Tyger to reach that mark in the history of the wrestling program.

“Josh is the first junior to get to 100 victories,” said coach Zach Brumfield, a Tyger alum who also is a member of the 100 club. “He got there faster than anyone else because he is a dedicated, hard worker and a great kid.”

The sendoff celebration continued in the atrium at the high school’s main entrance. The band played in the hallway and on both stairways leading to the commons, as students and faculty crowded around. Others looked down from the second floor.

Cheers and applause reached a crescendo as Lyons and his coaches waved and walked out the door shortly before 9 a.m. Lyons is scheduled to wrestle at about 4:30 p.m. at Ohio State University’s Schottenstein Center.
