Arts And Culture To Fill Central Park

The Mansfield Arts and Culture Festival will be filing Central Park this Saturday with treats for the eye, ear, and taste buds.

The event, an annual celebration of the arts in Richland County, showcases local artists and other wonderful area talent. Hours are 11 AM to 6 PM.

This year’s them is “Everyone Is An Artist.”

On hand will be area artists in paint/glass/fiber/wood/clay/ and more, demonstrations, awards, an SFX artist, food, and music.

Four Richland County Organizations Receive Five Ohio Arts Council Grants

In July, the Ohio Arts Council (OAC) board approved $18,246,306 in grants to support Ohio artists, arts and cultural organizations, students, educators, and public arts programming.

The 764 grants approved at the meeting constitute the initial and major state fiscal year 2023 funding round for the OAC.

Five of those grants, totaling $147,366, are headed to Richland County.

“We thank Ohio’s elected leadership—especially Governor Mike DeWine, Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted, and members of the Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio Senate—for their steadfast support of our state’s creative sector,” said OAC Executive Director Donna S. Collins. “With these awards, Ohio’s resilient arts and culture sector will continue to play a critical role in the health and vitality of communities across the state.”

Summer Road Trips: Arts In The Park On Lake Erie

This year we’re continuing our weekly look at unique events and attractions that are within an easy driving distance of Richland County. We call these “Summer Road Trips.” Of course, we regularly feature the many extraordinary places to visit right here in Richland County and encourage our readers to get out and experience what is on offer in our own backyard.

A wonderful arts and crafts festival set in a green park, and on the shore of Lake Erie — it doesn’t get much better than that during an Ohio summer. This month it is possible to travel an hour and a bit north to catch some lakeside air and acquire a souvenir as well.

Renaissance Offers New REN-spiration Classroom Holiday Sessions

The Renaissance Theatre will offer a new series of REN-spiration Classroom sessions beginning the week of December 13.

The series will feature classes that are formatted as a two-week series of offerings, with participants meeting once a week for two weeks. Class sessions are scheduled during times that allow families the opportunity to explore the arts while accommodating holiday activities. The REN-spiration Classroom provides a variety of educational theatre activities designed with creativity in mind.

The series, coordinated by Renaissance Resident Teaching Artist Dauphne Maloney, expanded its offerings to the community in a series of live “classes,” originally in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Based upon the popularity of its series of online classes, the Ren’s Education Department has continued with new series of classes for the fall, and into the winter. More…

Renaissance To Offer New QuaRENtine Classroom Sessions

The Renaissance Theatre will offer an additional series of its QuaRENtine Classroom sessions, beginning the week of June 8th. The new classes will be a “mini-series” of offerings, with participants meeting twice a week for two weeks. This will allow families the opportunity to either try out a class, or to work around other summer activities.

The Ren’s QuaRENtine Classroom, and Education Initiative, has offered a variety of educational activities designed with creativity in mind during the COVID-19 pandemic. The series, coordinated by Renaissance Resident Teaching Artist Dauphne Maloney, expanded its offerings to the community in a series of live “classes,” in April. Whether it’s a passion to perform a porch concert or create in a visual arts medium, Ohioans are continuing to create and inspire.

Our favorite artists teach and learn in Ohio’s schools, and their creative pursuits also are continuing throughout the ordered school-building closure. An effort has been launched to make sure these artistic artifacts are chronicled and curated for all to see.

The Ohio Department of Education has joined other statewide organizations to introduce Ohio Arts at Home. More…

Renaissance Artistic Director Honored In NYC

Michael Thomas, the Renaissance Theatre’s Artistic Director, and his writing partner Jeff Richmond created Melancholy Baby more than 15 years; it was an inventive musical about Shakespeare’s Hamlet that, as part of the storyline, was purported to have been written over sixty years earlier by the legendary duo Jezba Heinsplatt and Arturo DeSelza. In 2002, it was also the first show produced on the stage at Ars Nova, a nonprofit theater in New York City. More…

Renaissance Celebrates Meeting Funding Campaign Goal

At the same time that the Renaissance Performing Arts Association is nearing the 90th anniversary weekend for the Ohio/Renaissance Theatre, the organization is celebrating another achievement.

The annual Simple Goods Early Country Antiques & Primitive Goods Show is being held today, Saturday, November 4.

Ohio native Candy Looker, a primitive design artist and crafter, established Simple Goods in 2006. With the assistance of her husband, Tom, and sister and brother-in-law, Max and Harry Squires, Candy continued to run Simple Goods until June 2015, when she sold the show to Christina Hummel, a Pennsylvania antiques dealer, and Kris Casucci, a Massachusetts show promoter and antiques dealer. The Governor’s Awards for the Arts in Ohio is a statewide program that showcases and celebrates Ohio artists, arts organizations, arts patrons, and business support of the arts. The public is invited to nominate individuals and organizations in seven awards categories. A selection committee, made up of Ohio Arts Council board members and three individuals selected by Ohio Citizens for the Arts, chooses the winners.
