Woodland Elementary School will welcome parents and guardians on Thursday for an evening of activities focused on maintaining students’ academic skills during June, July and August.

A flyer sent home with students says “Stay sharp over the summer with ideas from our Woodland Family Night, Thursday, May 23, 6 to 7:30 PM.”

The evening will include make-and-take math, reading and art activities.

“Every child will paint a canvas, enjoy snacks, play games and receive free books,” said principal Bethany Scott. “We will have art displays from each grade level to showcase the work our students have done with our guest artist, Ruthie Akuchie.”

Martin Linder, Mansfield City Schools’ director of school improvement, said there is a great deal of research that shows children’s academic skills often erode over the summer.

“The most important thing is for children to read,” Linder said. “And it is important too for parents to talk to their children about what they are reading,”

Students’ last day will be June 4. The 2019-2020 school year will begin for students on August 22.
