Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center is excited to announce the annual Student Leadership Conference on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, starting at 9:00 AM. This event is open to all MOESC client/partnering districts and all school districts in Crawford, Morrow, and Richland counties. Students will enjoy an interactive and engaging day exploring leadership practices. Student-leaders will return to their districts with a plan to influence positive change in their schools and community. The conference aims to increase leadership capacities among our students.
MOESC wants to give students an opportunity outside of their home district to develop leadership and collaboration skills. The goal of this opportunity is to prepare students to assume leadership roles and become change agents. Bringing students from different districts delivers the possibilities of various perspectives and learning experiences.

MOESC’s Executive Director of Achievement and Leadership, Dr. Mark Burke, Jr., said, “We are very excited to host our third student leadership event. The feedback we received after our first two sessions has reassured us these student events are having an impact. We (educators) have to take opportunities to encourage and inspire young leaders to share their voice and have an impact in their schools and communities.“
Student leaders are provided continuous support and encouragement to take an active role in their schools and communities. In preparation for the conference, MOESC will engage students in planning and facilitating the leadership day. Mid-Ohio ESC spotlights Emily Wilhelm, a Junior at Highland High School, during the student leadership podcast leading up to the Student Leadership Conference. When asked how she would define leadership, Emily Wilhelm responds with an example, “If you see someone in the hallways that needs help, help them. Everybody is going through their own thing. Just giving someone that platform and comfort coming into the school, even if you’ve been here for a couple of years, helps provide leadership.“
A few positive takeaways that Emily Wilhelm has witnessed as a student leader are students being kinder to one another, a willingness to lend a helping hand, students looking into the future, thoughtfulness towards their community, and making connections outside of their organizations. As part of the National Honor Society, she enjoys giving back to her community and spreading kindness. Emily Wilhelm is looking forward to the Student Leadership Conference.

District superintendents were invited to submit their nominations for the Youth Leadership Council. Student ambassadors will also be invited to attend additional leadership trainings and activities throughout the year. These ambassadors will assist in planning the upcoming Student Leadership Conferences while continuing to serve on the Youth Leadership Council during the 2023 school year.
