Special to 1812Blockhouse

In December, Richland Newhope successfully applied and was awarded $253,464 from the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities to develop new projects to foster greater inclusion and independence for individuals with developmental disabilities living in Richland County.

“A portion of the grant dollars will be used to install adult-sized changing tables in targeted community locations (pictured). These tables will create accessible facilities for individuals with physical disabilities. Having public restrooms or private personal care stations will offer a space where someone can receive personal care assistance while in the community,” said Michele Giess, Richland Newhope Superintendent. “Richland Newhope will be partnering with several community organizations to identify key locations throughout the community to install this personal care equipment with an overall effort to improve community accessibility for everyone.”

The remaining grant dollars will go towards the large Sterkel Park renovation project, which is currently underway. The project’s second phase will begin this spring as soon as the weather breaks, with hopes that the new park will be open to the public before the end of 2024. This funding will undoubtedly impact the lives of those we serve and contribute to building a more inclusive community for all.

With this grant funding, Richland Newhope will continue to enhance our local infrastructure to ensure better accessibility for people with disabilities.
