Nestled near the bustling trails of Mohican State Park and in the Richland County Parks District lies a hidden natural wonder that has captured the imagination of locals and tourists alike. Hemlock Falls, tucked away near Butler and challenging to locate, stands as a testament to the timeless beauty and serenity of nature.

For thousands of years, since the retreat of the last glacier, Hemlock Falls has been a prominent feature in Richland County’s geological and historical timeline. The falls, with water gracefully tumbling over moss-covered sandstone cliffs, lie along the edge of the Mohican River valley. This ancient stream, weaving through the broken earth, has been a silent witness to the passage of time, making a visit to Hemlock Falls feel like stepping out of the current era.

Visitors often describe being at the falls as entering another world, a place where the rush and noise of modern life are replaced by the soothing sounds of cascading water and the rustle of hemlock trees. It is this otherworldly charm that has made Hemlock Falls a beloved tourist destination, offering a unique escape into the heart of nature.

As the Richland County Historical Society’s Alan Wigton has shared, ““This romantic destination drew pioneers, as well as earlier native inhabitants, for recreation and retreat since the dawn of time, as they used to say. We will take part in that legacy and reflect on what’s been written and handed down about this idyllic corner of our County.”

While Mohican State Park is renowned for its own waterfalls – Lyons Falls and Little Lyons Falls – many are unaware of Hemlock Falls, the third major waterfall in the region. Comparable in beauty, Hemlock Falls stands on land owned by the Mohican School for the Out of Doors; contact the Parks District for access information. The May 2023 parks levy passed by Richland County voters calls for work to make the falls more accessible.

A journey to Hemlock Falls can be complemented with a visit to other nearby natural attractions. Just a short drive south lies Honey Run Falls, another scenic waterfall nestled in a hemlock gorge. This makes the Mohican State Park region a haven for nature enthusiasts and waterfall chasers.
