Strange how I can barely remember what I had for dinner last night, but I can remember exactly where I was on a relatively warm September afternoon in 2008.
As it so happens, I was walking along North Main Street in Mansfield when I saw a group of people emerging from Coney Island Diner and walking in my direction. As it turns out, they were walking over to Richland Carrousel Park.
It took me almost no time at all to recognize the man who stood out among that number — it was the nominee for Vice-President of the United States, Senator Joe Biden.
It’s not the first time a current, past, or future President of the United States visited Mansfield or Richland County. Presidents Reagan and Kennedy made visits here in the last few decades, and of many late 19th century and early 20th century Presidents did so as well.
I wish that I had a camera with me that day, but that was a totally unexpected occurrence which I was reminded of today.
