In honor of the 70th anniversary of the end of the Korean War, The Ohio State University at Mansfield is hosting a special Veterans’ Day event that pays tribute to an unlikely hero: a horse named Reckless. This original work will be showcased on Friday, November 10 at 7:30 PM, Saturday, November 11 at 2:30 PM, and Sunday, November 12 at 2:30 PM. Admission is absolutely free.
Not Just a Horse: The Legend of Sergeant Reckless
Sergeant Reckless was no ordinary horse. She served alongside U.S. Marines during the Korean War, earning her stripes in more ways than one. Wounded in combat twice, she became the first horse in the Marine Corps to participate in an amphibious landing. From a scrawny, frightened mare, Reckless transformed into a battle-hardened hero, embodying the spirit of resilience and courage.
Recognitions and Honors
For her valor and service, Reckless was awarded two Purple Hearts, a Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, and Presidential Unit Citations from two countries. Her story is not just an account of bravery but also a testament to the enduring bonds formed between soldiers and their animal companions in the theater of war.
