In response to audience requests, the Renaissance will once again screen the 1925 classic silent film “Phantom of the Opera” underscored by the Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ on Friday, October 27 at 7 PM in the Renaissance Theatre. Theatre Organist Jay Spencer will accompany the film.

Jay Spencer has been performing on the Kilgen Pipe Organ at the Canton Palace Theatre for the past twenty-two years, regularly performing throughout the region as a theatre organist. He is well known in Canton for his skill with playing the scores for silent films as well as his fashionable socks.

The 1925 silent horror film “Phantom of the Opera” stars Lon Chaney as the Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House. Based on the 1910 French novel “Le Fantôme de l’Opéra,” it tells the story of a deformed Phantom who murdered and created chaos in an attempt to achieve stardom for the woman he loved, Christine Daaé.

The story has become a modern classic thanks to the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical of the same name, however the silent film was extremely popular in the 1920s, grossing over $2 million at the box office in 1925.

Tickets are $5, general admission, and available on MansfieldTickets.com, at the Renaissance Box Office, by calling (419) 522-2726 and at the door.
