If you had to guess, would you think that Mansfield has a white Christmas at least half the time?

If you said yes, you would be wrong.

Climate.gov, presented by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, set out to answer that question for locations across the country. Via an interactive map, the post asked – “Are you dreaming of a white Christmas?”

The map shows the historic probability of there being at least one inch of snow on the ground at various weather stations. The determination is based on the latest “US Climate Normals” – three decade average of several climatological measurements.

According to the post, “…while the map shows historical probability that at least 1 inch of snow will be observed on December 25, the actual conditions in any year may vary widely from these because the weather patterns present will determine the snow on the ground or snowfall on Christmas day.”

According to the map, the probability of a white holiday in Mansfield over that period, with its elevation of 394.70 feet, is 37%.

Other Ohio cities and their percentages:

  • Cleveland – 40%
  • Oberlin – 40%
  • Tiffin – 38%
  • Wooster – 37%
  • Danville – 35%
  • Norwalk – 32%
  • Marysville – 29%
  • Millersburg – 23%
  • Columbus – 23%
  • Lima – 16%

The interactive map can be accessed here.

The current forecast suggests that Mansfield and Richland County will have another snow-less Christmas Day this year.
