When Ohio Governor John Kasich released his proposed 2017-2018 budget proposal, it included changes to monies for schools that would, if enacted, reduce funding by 2019 for some 55% of the districts in Ohio.

In Richland County, however, the majority of school districts would see some increase. This is according to numbers released this week by the Ohio Office of Budget and Management.

Part of the proposed change impacts districts with a population loss of five percent or more.

The changes for each district in Richland County would be as follows:

District – Current – Proposed – Change (negative in parenthesis)

  • Clear Fork — $8,262,194 – $7,936,023 – ($326,171)
  • Crestview – $7,560,173 – $7,467,971 – {$92,201)
  • Lexington – $9,731,835 – $10,089,892 – $358,057
  • Lucas – $2,787,569 – $2,647,504 – ($140,064)
  • Madison – $17,979,452 – $19,769,209 – $1,789,756
  • Mansfield – $35,066,536 – $36,234,351 – $1,167,815
  • Ontario – $3,073,324 – $3,384,902 – $31,1578
  • Plymouth-Shiloh – $5,591,860 – $5306292 – ($285,568)
  • Shelby – $10,117,880 – $10,292,525 — $174,645

Another element of Kasich’s proposal would be to add three members of the business community to each local school board, albeit in a non-voting capacity.

It bears stating that this is a preliminary budget; school funding numbers typically change as they make their way through the legislative process.
