Perhaps it is the presence of the word omicron in the news related to the current pandemic, but whatever the case, the rate of local vaccination has increased in recent days.

This includes those who received their very first COVID-19 vaccination.

In numbers released on Tuesday by the Ohio Department of Health and Richland Public Health, it was revealed that the weekly rate of first-time vaccinations approached 700 per week in the first part of December. From Monday to Tuesday, there were 60 first-time doses administered.

A total of 43.73% of Richland Countians have received at least one vaccine shot, or 52,980 indivuals. The leading age group for recipients in terms of total number was 50-59 years old, whereas those aged 70-74 turned out the most by percentage.

Across Ohio, 58.82% of people have started the vaccine – a full 15% ahead of Richland County’s number.

In terms of those completing their initial dosages (two for Moderna and Pfizer; one for Johnson & Johnson), 54.19% have done so, as compared to 40.60% of Richland Countians.

Booster shots are now available, and as of Tuesday 16,967 have been given, with 313 in the last 24 hours.

Vaccine information, including booster shots, is available at Richland Public Health and by contacting either Ohio Health or Avita.
